8A Medical/SurgicalMedical/Surgical (8A) is a 36-bed medical/surgical unit The team on 8A provides respectful, patient-centered care to the diverse and often underserved patients who receive care at Denver Health. This unit offers amazing learning opportunities and facilitates the development of critical thinking as care is provided for varied medicine, surgery, and specialty patients. The 8A nursing team excels in mentoring new graduate RNs and in orienting new staff to the unit. The nurse-to-patient ratiowith a 1:4 - 1:6 ratio and CNAs work with a ratio of 1:12.Job Summary
The Nursing Apprentice, under the direct supervision of an RN, performs basic patient care activities. The Nursing Apprentice role allows nursing students an opportunity to enhance clinical skills in a hospital environment while still enrolled in an ADN or BSN program. The Nursing Apprentice I adheres to the American Nurses Association (ANA) standards of professional nursing and performance, and the ANA Code of Ethics (2015) to provide care to all patients. Utilizes the Theory of Human Caring and Caritas in daily practice. "Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, Founder / Director, Watson Caring Science Institute".
Essential Functions:
Performs basic patient care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including but not limited to, monitoring vital signs, taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output. (30%)
Assists patients with tending to personal care and activities of daily living, including but not limited to, bathing, grooming and eating. (10%)
Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to nursing staff. (10%)
Assists with keeping unit(s) and patient rooms stocked, clean, and orderly. (10%)
Develop specific clinical nurse skills through observation of experts and supervised, hands-on experience. (10%)
Documentation that complies with clinical guidelines. (10%)
Partners with interprofessional team on healthcare consumer throughput by proactively solving problems related to capacity and healthcare consumer flow. (10%)
Collaborates with interprofessional teams to incorporate Lean principles for quality improvement initiatives. (10%)
Education:
Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program Required
Work Experience:
less than 1 year Must have successfully completed Med/Surg 1 at time of application with the ability to provide transcript with grade. Required
Licenses:
BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action.
Ability to ensure confidentiality of patient information by creating and maintaining a secure and trusting environment by not sharing information learned on the job, except when necessary in the performance of the job responsibilities or to improve a patient’s care.
Ability to ensure all duties, responsibilities and competencies are conducted in a manner that is effective and appropriate to patients/clients to who care/service is being provided.
Demonstrates knowledge and applicability of the principles of growth and development over the life span, as well as demonstrating the ability to assess data reflecting the patient’s status and interpreting appropriate cultural information of the patient(s) to whom care/ services is being delivered/provided.
Ability to complete and maintain clinical competency standards.
