PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To perform pre-analytical preparation of laboratory specimens and limited waived analytical testing. To receive, sort, and order tests on laboratory specimens.
This position will work every other weekend, day shift.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs pre-analytical preparation of specimens including but not limited to centrifuging, aliquotting, refrigerating, and freezing of specimens, slide preparation, and loading of instruments with reagents, consumables, and quality control and patient samples.
Performs limited waived analytical testing including but not limited to routine urinalysis, and occult blood tests.
Performs Send Out functions for laboratory including preparing and packing specimens for transport to WH Hospital, and preparing/packaging specimens for shipment to Mayo Reference Laboratory.
Receives, sorts, and centrifuges laboratory specimens verifying match of requisition and specimen.
Selects correct patient encounter, registers patient, orders laboratory work, prints identification labels, and affixes labels to specimens.
Delivers specimens and specimen coolers to laboratories.
Answers telephone calls from physicians, nurses, and lab personnel giving out laboratory results as needed.
Inventories and stocks supplies.
Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices. Reports to the appropriate personnel, in a timely fashion, any unsafe activities, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
Demonstrates skills and knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, including knowledge of growth and development, the ability to obtain and interpret information to identify patient needs, and provide the care needed.
Performs other related duties as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High school graduate.
Two years applicable clinical (specimen processing, phlebotomy, laboratory) experience or equivalent college courses in the Healthcare field.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of pre-analytic methods of specimen management
Knowledge of clerical methods and techniques.
Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
Knowledge of office equipment and machines.
Knowledge of a keyboard (typing or computer).
Ability to utilize information to accurately identify patient and match specimen with request.
Ability to verbally communicate in a clear and understanding manner.
Ability to courteously and efficiently handle all telephone requests.
Ability to follow written and verbal procedures.
Ability to process specimens as directed.
