Medical Technologist I - PRN - Days
Job Summary:
The Medical Technologist performs and evaluates test results, develops and modifies procedures, and works with laboratory director to establish programs to ensure the accuracy of test results. Performs laboratory testing in accordance to turnaround time policy to aid physician in timely treatment of patients.
Department Summary:
The Laboratory at Vanderbilt Tullahoma Harton Hospital receives, processes, and finalizes specimens in many different arenas of patient care. We operate 24/7, receive specimens in the outpatient setting(Nursing homes, Home Health, Independent Providers, Fast Pace clinics and etc.) as well as taking care of our inpatients that are in the hospital and their laboratory testing needs.
The Laboratory technicians here at VTHH are involved in many work processes in the lab to ensure quality lab results for all our patients.
These many task include such things as receiving properly labeled specimens, quality control of instruments, which includes testing of quality control material to maintain proper instrument functionality, troubleshooting equipment that is not working correctly, verifying results prior to release to the patients chart, and calling critical results in a timely manner.
All the while, receiving specimens from the many different areas mentioned above.
It is helpful for the candidate to have knowledge of the following systems: Cerner, Softbank, Epic
Key Responsibilities:
- Performs general housekeeping duties to keep work areas safe from contamination and physical hazards
- Continuous cooperation with co-workers and other hospital departments to ensure our customers are VERY SATISFIED
- Performs instrument maintenance and troubleshooting activities in areas of demonstrated competency
- Takes initiative to update procedure manuals as changes are required
- Demonstrates Coaching, Mentoring, and Education capabilities with all of the following disciplines: MT, MLT, Medical Student, Phlebotomist, and Laboratory assistant
- Actively participates and supports co-workers participating in Community Cares initiatives
- Works with students and other interested persons to promote the clinical laboratory profession
- Demonstrates a Positive Attitude at all times
- Performs daily Quality Control activities in areas of demonstrated competency
- Participates in Quality Assurance programs
- Performs Proficiency Testing in areas of demonstrated competency
- Reports critical values to appropriate physician or nursing service upon verification of result.
- Shows an awareness of how patient age and other factors can affect test results.
- Recognizes and maintains specimen integrity from receipt through testing & storage
- Participates in Continuing Education activities
- Takes problem-solving initiative
- Takes a pro-active approach to learning new procedures and/or laboratory areas, including LIS
- Recognizes opportunities to reduce reagent waste and unnecessary test repeats
- Manages inventory, time and workflow efficiently
- Recognizes and reports Laboratory Compliance issues, including potential fraud, over- or under-billing for services performed, CPT coding changes or discrepancies, and questionable medical necessity
