The VA Western Colorado Health Care System (WCHCS) is a Level 2 facility with service-lines serving medical, surgical, neurological, and psychiatric inpatients and outpatients, with a Level III Emergency Department, multiple VA Clinics, and a Community Living Center (CLC). There is a significant outpatient psychiatric population, with admissions for medical co-morbidities. Home-Based Primary Care (HBPC) and telehealth nursing care are also provided. This announcement is open until filled. We accept applications for this occupation on an ongoing basis; qualified applicants will be reviewed and referred to the selecting official on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month until a candidate is selected. The Staff Nurse in the Medical/Surgical unit is able to provide direct and indirect nursing care to a wide range of patients such as postoperative patients, acutely ill patients, hospice, or psychiatry patients. Primary responsibilities will be acting as charge nurse, completing assessments and reassessments, medication administration, treatment administration/interventions, Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) care, education, completion of required documentation and involvement in committee, workgroup or quality initiatives. They may have daily duties assigned by charge nurse or supervisor. They will demonstrate competency by utilizing the nursing process not only on an individual level but as a unit/team. They will demonstrate leadership by involving others in the improvement of care. They will support the client in self-demonstration and act as a patient advocate. They will serve as a resource on ethical issues, serve as a preceptor or mentor, participate in quality improvement activities and will participate in education activities to improve their role and expertise. They will be able to evaluate self and others using professional standards and will take action to improve performance as an individual and as a unit/team. They will use group process to identify, analyze, research, and resolve care problems within their unit. They will function in a charge nurse role as needed. They will act as a team player and assist other units as needed. The Staff Nurse demonstrates the ability to work effectively with others, to initiate and lead groups of patients, and/or other personnel. The Staff Nurse demonstrates professional nursing practice, which has been characterized by leadership in improving care. Additionally, the Staff Nurse uses sound clinical judgement in assessing, planning, implementing, documenting and evaluating nursing care. The Staff Nurse applies current concepts and findings from research and/or studies to practice and shares clinical expertise with professional and supportive personnel. The Staff Nurse accurately documents and reports care. They identify, analyze, and resolves patient care problems whose resolution results in a significant improvement of nursing care to individual and/or groups of patients.
