Provides leadership by planning, organizing, and directing operational activities of the department or assigned area to support the company mission and vision, and meet strategic goals.
Works with Laboratory Director to ensure service levels meet needs of clients and patients.
Represents management and the company.
Must be available Monday through Friday 8:00 am-4:30 pm. Must be flexible with schedule changes in order to meet operational needs.
Responsible for managing a state certified workplace drug testing and clinical substance abuse testing laboratory.
Responsible for the direct supervision of employees including recruitment, training, development and performance management.
Regularly refers to CFR 49 Part 40 regulations and other Fed/State regulations to ensure that drug testing procedures for employment purposes are followed and in compliance with industry standards and requirements.
Investigates, researches and recommends possible corrective action to address collection errors, processing errors, procedure errors, etc.
Serves as a resource to physicians and answers questions regarding drug results, issues with metabolism, possible drug interactions, etc.
Responds to inquires and shares knowledge with regard to various testing methods (including EIA & GC/MS) and outcomes and makes recommendations based on specific needs/concerns.
Provides expert testimony and defends test results, the chain of custody process and other forensic practices.
Provides training, technical presentation, and interacts with print and broadcast media.
Markets DLS toxicology services. Establishes and maintains good public relations with institutions and the community.
Toxicology: A Ph.D. in one of the natural sciences; or a Master’s, or Bachelor’s degree in a natural science with concomitant experience in toxicology, pharmacology, chemistry, or biological chemistry.
There may be additional requirements for those serving as General Supervisor and/or Technical Consultant/Supervisor to meet CLIA requirements.

Minimum three to seven (3-7) years of laboratory experience depending on degree.
Continuing education in one or more disciplines within the laboratory and in laboratory management.
As applicable: Four years of training and/or experience in high complexity testing in the designated specialty(ies) of service for which the person is responsible including GC/MS and/or LC/MS.
Three years of supervisory or managerial experience.
Experience with forensic laboratory practice (chain of custody).
Knowledge of 49 CFR Part 40 Federal Workplace Drug and alcohol testing programs preferred.
Certified as an MT/MLS, MLT, Categorical (e.g. M(ASCP), or Specialist (e.g. SM(ASCP) by one of the following National Commission of Health Certifying Agencies or by an agency recognized by the Hawaii Department of Health Laboratories Branch:
American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP-BOC),
American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB),
American Medical Technologists (AMT)
Toxicology: Additional certification by the American Board of Forensic Toxicologists (ABFT) preferred. Must be board eligible.
Hawaii State License as Technologist, Technician, or Specialist, as appropriate.
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both in verbal and written form.
Effective coaching skills.
Intermediate personal computer skills preferred, including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook and routine database. (Ex: send/receive email, create letters, format data, use tables, insert objects)
As applicable: Must possess a valid State of Hawaii (or equivalent) motor vehicle license and a current acceptable traffic abstract.
